(The survey ends Oct. 11th, 2011.)

Blogger's Note: We need this effort to gain some traction and some effective changes need to come out of this project.  Hopefully this effort will help communities better understand their own assets as a part of the greater region, utilize regional assets as a marketing tool, and begin to position ourselves with how the State of Wisconsin ends up presenting itself as a place to do business.  Quality of life will always be important, but the focus needs to stay on growing our local and regional economy. Of course, making this about the Madison region and not just Madison is always a challenge.

151-Main Street Interchange Construction Update for Week of Sept. 26th (City of Sun Prairie Engineering Department)

151-Main Street Interchange Construction Update for Week of Sept. 26th

DOT Project:
·         Work to continue on the southbound on ramp to USH 151
·         Concrete pavement installations on W. Main Street turn lanes
·         Curb & gutter installations along W. Main Street
.         Traffic sign installations throughout project

City Project:
·         Curb & gutter installation along W. Main Street
·         Grading and concrete pavement installation along O'Keeffe Avenue

Traffic control:
·         Traffic control will remain the same all of next week.

Truck Traffic Advisory:

·         It is currently very difficult for large trucks to make a left turn onto Main Street from the SB 151 ramp. These trucks may want to either 1) turn right and go around the Round-a-bout to go east bound on Main Street, or 2) they could go up to the 151-CTH C - Reiner Rd interchange and turn around to head NB on 151and exit on to Main Street. This right turn is much easier for large trucks.

Traffic control will remain the same for this week.  Note that there are no turns onto Main Street from O'Keeffe Ave.

Persons travelling this route are advised that construction is likely to be occurring on Saturdays for the next several weeks.  People are also strongly encouraged to continue to slow down and watch for construction workers and equipment at all times in the construction zone.

In addition, vehicles traveling westbound on W. Main Street. and wanting to access businesses along O'Keeffe Avenue must turn at the Clarmar Drive intersection.  Access to O'Keeffe Avenue for westbound vehicles does not exist west of Clarmar Drive.  The contractor has reported multiple occasions where westbound vehicles on Main St. have tried to turn left on to the 151 off-ramp to Main St.  Drivers are asked to be mindful of where allowable access routes are located.

The next business meeting is scheduled for October 6th at 9:00 a.m.

Is Your Business Ready for the 100 Day Challenge? (City of Sun Prairie Office of Economic Development)

Project 365 Announces the 100 Day Challenge

There are only 100 days remaining on Project 365.  To commemorate this milestone, I am issuing the following challenge to area businesses:

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, includes the following...
  • Issuing at least one press release worthy of being posted on this blog for each of the months of October, November, and December. (Extra credit for any story that makes the Star or other media outlet.)
  • Utilizing Facebook and/or Twitter to post at least one of each of the following: 1) a promotional story of a specific marketing effort you are undertaking, 2) at least one customer thank you or other recognition, and 3) a response to a customer service issue. (Extra credit if you aren't on either of these media and you start an account on one or both.  Also extra credit if there are links to or feeds from your social media accounts on your website.)
  • Claiming and updating your Google Places page (free)
  • Creating and emailing a brief written description of your social media strategy for 2012.  Doesn't have to be long, but it should address the big four questions--What is your message? Who is your audience? What media will best deliver that message to your audience?  And lastly, how do you measure if it was effective?  (Extra credit if you can explain how social media efforts are to be coordinated with the rest of your marketing strategies.)
Think you're up for it?  Want to try it but you're not sure if you can do it or not?  Maybe you would just like to ask some questions about social media? Contact Neil Stechschulte at 608-825-0894 or nstechschulte[at]cityofsunprairie.com with any questions.

Watch for special events during the rest of 2011 to help interested businesses meet these goals.

I ask companies and businesses that would like to participate in the 100 day challenge to sign up by e-mailing me at the address above by Friday September 30th.

Successful businesses completing all four tasks will be featured on the blog for all of 2012, and will receive a special recognition from the City of Sun Prairie, and will be invited to participate in a photo shoot and press release in January 2012. An overall winner will be selected in January as Project 365's Business of the Year.  (I might even throw in donuts for a day at your place of work if you really knock this out of the park.)

Good luck!

Matrix Product Development Expands RFID Applications for Industrial Food Processing Ovens (Matrix Product Development Press Release)

Measuring temperature readings in large industrial food processing ovens has never been simple or easy.   Wisconsin food processing equipment firm Alkar is utilizing a new solution provided by Matrix Product Development that dramatically decreases raw material waste, reduces labor costs and improves regulatory compliance.

The solution is made possible through RFID technology. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology allows information to be read wirelessly from a distance. RFID allows for multiple items to be read at one time at distances up to hundreds of feet, and does not require a direct line of site. Matrix Product Development used RFID technology to create the Wyze-Temp® system, and customized it to meet Alkar's needs. In this application, an RFID enabled sensor is attached to the product being cooked as it passes down the oven’s conveyor belt. It is specifically designed to withstand the extreme heat of the oven. From inside of the oven, it transmits the real time temperature information wirelessly for immediate feedback and analysis. If the temperature moves outside of specified variance parameters, an audible or visible signal/alarm is is activated.

Wyze-Temp® is incredibly valuable to Alkar for three reasons:

1. Raw material cost savings.  The immediate and accurate feedback on temperature allows users of Alkar's equipment to monitor and adjust heat controls much more effectively than other equipment, which provides additional protection against thousands of pounds of food product being improperly cooked and potentially wasted.

2. Labor Costs.  Labor costs are greatly reduced as employees no longer have to be responsible for the dutiful task of opening and closing the oven door to take readings throughout the day.

3.Regulatory Compliance.  This Wyze-Temp® system also helps Alkar stay compliant to the many regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture which very closely monitors the inner workings of meat preparation and cooking. The Wyze-Temp® system helps ensure that nothing goes wrong during the cooking procedure which could lead to E-Coli or other sickening food-borne illnesses.

Alkar and Matrix Product Development first met in 2007 to discuss how to improve quality in Alkar's equipment. By 2009, Alkar was using Wyze-Temp® temperature sensors in their continuous-cooking ovens. Alkar relies on the Wyze-Temp® system to allow them to be successful in the food-processing industry where there is little margin for error.  Matrix Product Development's successful implementation of the Wyze-Temp® system for Alkar opens the door for further expansion of this unique RFID application across a wide array of  industries and market lines. Five other companies are now using the system for their continuous-cooking ovens which utilize a conveyor belt system, as well as many more which use it for batch ovens in which the food is relatively stationary.

Matrix Product Development is a high-tech electronic design and product development firm based in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in the Greater Madison area.  For more information, click here, contact Matrix Product Development at 608-834-1661 or email info@matrixpd.com.
